Market Development History
In the early 2000s, the industry relied heavily on single-layer polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) films. These offered basic protection but lacked the barrier capabilities needed for sterile processing, often resulting in shorter shelf lives and higher food waste in the Dutch retail sector.
By 2010-2015, the shift toward multi-layer co-extrusion and lamination occurred. This era saw the rise of the tri laminate retort pouch, allowing brands to utilize autoclave sterilization, which significantly expanded the distribution radius for ready-to-eat meals across Europe.
From 2018 to the present, the focus has shifted to "Design for Recycling." The integration of mono-material laminates and the development of custom food pouches with logo using eco-friendly inks have become the standard for brands aiming to comply with the Netherlands' Plastic Pact.
