Market Development History
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Belgian market relied heavily on single-layer polyethylene (PE) and basic food packaging pouches. These provided basic moisture protection but lacked the oxygen barriers necessary for extended shelf life without refrigeration.
Between 2010 and 2020, the industry shifted toward co-extrusion and lamination. The introduction of PET/AL/CPP structures allowed for the rise of the tri laminate retort pouch, enabling the "boil-in-bag" trend and reducing food waste through better preservation technology.
From 2021 to the present, the focus has pivoted to "Mono-materiality." To comply with Belgian recycling streams, the industry is replacing complex multi-material laminates with high-barrier mono-PE or mono-PP structures that provide the same protection but are fully recyclable.
