From simple monolayers to intelligent, sustainable barrier systems.
Market Development History
In the early 2000s, the Mexican market relied heavily on basic PE/PP monolayers. However, by 2010, the "industrialization wave" introduced complex co-extrusion techniques, allowing for the first widespread use of food packaging pouches with basic moisture barriers.
Between 2015 and 2020, there was a strategic shift toward high-value branding. Companies began integrating advanced rotogravure printing, leading to the explosion of custom food pouches with logo that allowed small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) to compete with multinational corporations on retail shelves.
Since 2021, the focus has pivoted toward "Functional Sustainability." The industry is now integrating bio-polymers and high-barrier retort films to reduce material weight while increasing the sterilization efficiency of the packaging process.
Future Development Trends
Mono-Material Recyclability
The shift from multi-material laminates to mono-PE or mono-PP structures to ensure the packaging can be fully recycled within Mexico's evolving waste management infrastructure.
Smart Packaging Integration
Incorporation of QR codes and NFC tags into custom food packaging pouch designs to provide traceability from Mexican farms to international consumers.
Active Barrier Technology
Development of oxygen-scavenging layers within the laminate to extend the shelf life of organic foods without the need for refrigeration during domestic transport.
