From basic poly-bags to multi-layer high-barrier engineered films.
Market Development History
Prior to 2010, the Romanian market relied heavily on simple polyethylene bags and rigid containers. The primary focus was on basic containment rather than extended shelf-life technology, leading to higher food waste in the supply chain.
Between 2011 and 2018, the introduction of co-extrusion and lamination technologies allowed for the adoption of tri laminate retort pouch structures. This enabled the "ready-to-eat" meal segment to explode, as products could now be sterilized in the pouch, removing the need for refrigeration.
From 2019 to the present, the focus has shifted toward "Circular Economy" principles. The integration of PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) resins and biodegradable polymers has become the industry standard to align with EU directives on plastic waste reduction.
Future Development Trends
Intelligent Barrier Integration
The next 3 years will see the rise of active packaging that monitors freshness in real-time, reducing spoilage in the Romanian organic produce sector.
Mono-material Transition
To improve recyclability, the industry is moving from multi-material laminates to high-performance mono-PE structures that offer similar barrier properties.
Digitalization of Branding
Integration of QR codes and NFC tags into customized pouches to provide traceability from Romanian farms to the end consumer.
